2016 Road Trip – Grand Canyon South Rim

After finding that a) temps get really cold in GCNP during fall, and b) campsites are reserved over a year in advance regardless of what the interwebs say, I had to cave in and stay at a hotel.  Upside is I slept like a baby for the first time this trip.  Howard Johnson’s beds are criminally comfortable.  Also Couchsurfing in Flagstaff is weak sauce and nobody replies even days in advance, get it together people!

Visited the Grand Canyon South Rim today.  Impressive, but have to say if I ever do it again, North Rim wins all the way.  So many less tourist mobs in the North.  Had to wait 30 minutes for two Instagram hookers (and I’m not exaggerating at all, they were telling people to follow them) to stop taking “sexy” photos in Bright Angel today so I could even pass through due to the crowd.  Wasted hiking time.  Ugh.

Aside from people who don’t know how to act in public, the views were great!  Started at a stop called The Abyss because seriously that’s metal as fuck and I have no other reason.  Took the shuttle out to Hermits Rest on the far west end and made my way back slowly from there.  Hiked most of the rim trail, and partially down the canyon before sunlight disappeared.  Very easy trail on the rim but probably walked 5-10 miles total.  Saw an elk herd no more than 50 feet away eating wild berries, and so many deer I couldn’t even count.

Back in Flagstaff again.  Not sure on destination for tomorrow but another adventure certainly will be had!

Bonus images: Whilst the subject matter is serious, I couldn’t help but chuckle at this illustration.  Maybe you will understand why.  Someone put this man out of his misery.  Jorts and no shirt – seriously bro?!  “It’s so damn hot, (chocolate) milk was a bad choice.” Et cetera.  Enjoy.
