Sedona Airport Scenic Lookout

Made my way into Sedona, Arizona with intentions on exploring it for the rest of the day. Turns out today was their “Festival of Lights”, a large winter event. It also turns out today is Saturday (which I lost track of) and frankly Sedona is not the place I’d suggest visiting on a weekend. I tried making my way to several trailheads but parking is a nightmare when it’s this busy and I couldn’t find any that weren’t packed. That’s not to say I didn’t see some amazing things through my windshield along the way, but it’s too dang busy today to be enjoyable.

My last hope was visiting the Sedona airport for a view across the valley below. Parking is $3 here and you will still find plenty of people but the crowd probably doesn’t really ramp up until around sunset. Either way for $3 this might be the least expensive and most rewarding thing you can do. You want some gorgeous red rocks? Here you go:

Most of these formations have names: Thunder Mountain (left), Capitol Butte (left-center), and Coffee Pot Rock (center). Others like Chimney Rock can be seen in the other photos.

One last look a little bit further west. I’d wager you can see at least 180 degrees or more at this location with zero hiking involved. Super easy for anyone to come see. Apparently there is a vortex nearby if you are into the more ‘spiritual’ side of things that Sedona has to offer but that isn’t my cup of tequila.

Marking it down to come back later and do some hiking when it’s less crowded but for now I need to hit the road and make use of the short time I have left.

Author’s Note: Due to many reasons – none of them very good – I’m posting this from the future in July 2022. Actual visit date/time December 14, 2019 1:28pm. I’ll backdate it later so as to maintain chronological order. I’ve got an overwhelming backlog of photos to process which is probably why I procrastinate. Hope you enjoy them all the same.
