Thunderstorms over Fairmont, MN (Redux)

Skies were gray all day ever since I left home, however as I started crossing through southern Minnesota near the city of Fairmont a clear line of storms appeared and were moving towards me.

Here’s a screenshot of the radar. All things considered, I’m in a good location as compared to being further north or south where they are really getting hit. Minneapolis is about to have a fun afternoon.

As I approached the front, here’s a view of the clouds. My crappy cell phone photo doesn’t do it justice, this is a huge line of storms and clouds are black.

Rain was flash-flood levels for just a minute or two with a few pebbles of hail. The sun was starting to peek out which caused visibility problems reflecting off the wet roads. Decided to pull off at a rest stop for a couple minutes to let it set so I can see again.

Author’s note: I am revisiting old posts from my 2016 road trip because I posted all of them from my cell phone and some of them are a bit of a mess. Main reason is to properly edit photos rather than just having what came out of my phone camera, and to include higher res photos from my mirrorless camera that never got published. Additionally some of the locations on the Geomap are wrong or often have multiple locations in a single post. OG text should be captured in a summary field when available.

Text from the original post in 2016

It was a long drive from Madison to Sioux Falls due to heavy rain and road construction. Hard to get any good photos since it was overcast all day, but the fall colors are starting to show near LaCrosse. Caught part of the sunset at the last test stop in Minnesota. Stayed with a guy named Camden that I found on couchsurfing.com and shared some brews from back home. He also suggested a place that had the biggest breakfast burrito I have ever had. Probably the last bed/couch I will sleep in until New Mexico… Hopefully this uploads, cell service out here is minimal at best. Also apologies if the photos are hard to click on – the mobile WordPress app is missing a feature or two compared to PC editing.
