Not much time left before sunset, and it looks like some heavy rain is on the way for the evening (also look at those low temperatures, below freezing even down south!). Time for one last stop before finding a campsite.
My first ever stop in Alabama is at the Freedom Hills Overlook near the town of Cherokee and back on the Natchez Trace Parkway.
From the parking lot it’s only a short walk (hike?) up the paved path to the viewpoint. It is a bit steep but if you take your time most people should be able to get there.
There are a couple benches along the way if you need a short rest. The grade is relatively steep but the distance is short. Pace yourself, enjoy the journey.
Another bench at the overlook where the tree canopy has been trimmed back for a view of the surrounding hills.
Although fall colors are past peak, I dare say these are the best I’ve seen on my southern route so far. It’s a bit of an overcast hazy day throwing a blue cast on the horizon. Supposedly this is also the highest point on the Natchez Trace Parkway trail (though not an official state highpoint or anything like that). Not a bad way to end my Thanksgiving-eve adventures!

Cross another state off my goal to reach the entire lower 48 and beyond. More Alabama adventures to come, for now I need to find camp before the storms roll in.
