I stopped in Raton, New Mexico to get some fuel and decide where to rest for the night. Not much around these parts so I took the easy out and booked a campsite at the Raton KOA campground. Not very busy even on a Saturday night because it’s remote and not a popular destination which I was thankful for. They also have laundry and showers which I was very thankful for. Decided to try a local restaurant called K-Bob’s Steakhouse which I thought was local but in fact is a chain (albeit a small one, 6 locations).
I’m not one to complain much, but for a place calling itself a steakhouse this is embarrassing. Chef Mike appears to have done most of the cooking, and those grill marks are more fake than Milli Vanilli. Steak is steak but for whatever this cost it was too much. Lesson learned, at least I’ll never have to go back again.
KOA itself wasn’t bad other than some skunks spraying off in the distant neighborhoods (but I can’t hold that against them). Sunset was pretty fantastic and I had nobody camping within like 3 sites of my own. Did a load of laundry, had my shower, and was feeling quite refreshed.
Temps at low elevation have still been pretty hot in the 80s and 90s in this area but that’s about to change. Forecast calls for a 40-degree temperature drop and possibly some snow by next weekend. Thankfully I’ll be long gone by that time and probably enjoying more good weather down in Las Cruces. Back on the road for more adventures as I wind my way southward!
