World’s Only Corn Palace (Redux)

I’m not a huge fan of “tourist traps” as I’d rather be out in nature. Couldn’t help but stop at a place called the Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota because how often do you hear something called a corn palace? It’s the only one in the world apparently so they have that going for them.

Each year is a new theme, this year is Rock Of Ages. Massive 20 foot tall design of Willie Nelson with people walking below for scale.

A giant Elvis Presley on the other side of the building.

The pictures continue wrapping around the exterior walls of the hall with scenes of a country western singer, a piano, a disco/Saturday Night Fever, and many others.

There’s a gym inside with a basketball court and the corn murals continue. Credit where it’s due, this is a creative display of local farming culture. Kinda corny though.

Only about 55°F outside and feels like fall, I like it. Back in the car now for more driving.

Author’s note: I am revisiting old posts from my 2016 road trip because I posted all of them from my cell phone and some of them are a bit of a mess. Main reason is to properly edit photos rather than just having what came out of my phone camera, and to include higher res photos from my mirrorless camera that never got published. Additionally some of the locations on the Geomap are wrong or often have multiple locations in a single post. OG text should be captured in a summary field when available.

Against my better judgement I decided to stop at a tourist trap called the Corn Palace.  It's the world's only one so they have that going for them. Cool points for the huge eternal Willie Nelson and Elvis corn murals but not much else. Kinda corny. Only about 55F outside and feels like fall so getting back in the car.

  1. Interesting design this time around. It is amazing how it is changed to different themes all the time!
