Trans Wisconsin Adventure Trail – Lansing to Potosi (2024)

Hanging out with some Toyota friends again for a weekend of camping and southwest Wisconsin (and Iowa) gravel road exploration on the Trans Wisconsin Adventure Trail, or TWAT for short. Basically a repeat of some points from 2023 but this time I’m too lazy to break apart in separate posts for the locations. Shout out to this guy with a clean OG 4Runner, not with our group just someone I found driving south of Madison.

Wyalusing State Park – Wisconsin Ridge Campground

As usual we try to grab campsites at Wyalusing State Park on the Wisconsin Ridge Campground on the cliff side. Couple of gratuitous sunrise shots with the hazy fog falling down into the valley.

Here we are lined up staging for departure at the Nature Center / Concession shelter before splitting into two groups to make the convoy size more manageable on the roads (which in fact we didn’t actually split until the next stop).

And finally one sunset shot at the campsite before the photos stop and drinking starts. Weather this year was fantastic.

Potosi Point

Our group headed to the southern terminus at Potosi Point first. As per usual we had the place nearly to ourselves as it’s early season and not very busy yet on weekends.

Here’s a collection of individual shots at the point for no reason in particular other than playing with my camera.

Dugway Road Overhang

One of the best vehicle photo-ops in the state is at the rock shelter overhang on Dugway Road. Here’s one of the newer guys in his brand new stock 5th gen 4Runners doing his bro pose.

RA’s stock height (I think?) 1st gen Tacomas doing his best to flex. Cool little truck, I dig the style.

Often times hard to get shots of my own truck, today was a bit slower pace but I didn’t spend a lot of time setting up. Just a quick snap and go.

Someone else shared a better angle – not sure who it was but thanks for the help friends!

Yellow River State Forest

Just one quick shot at the bridge in the Yellow River State Forest in Iowa along the route. This time I remembered to angle the parking for a better photo. Plenty of traffic in this area so only a quick pit stop and we were back on the road.

Mount Hosmer City Park

And finally we reached our northern terminus for the segment and final stop of the day at Mount Hosmer City Park in Iowa. No traffic today so I stopped at the small scenic overlook midway up the steep roads as I had missed this before.

Here’s a closer look at the Mississippi River and the bridge crossing over it. Construction continues on the new bridge that they are building right along side the old one.

Another truck lineup for photos. Somehow it appears we lost part of the group here? Not sure where they went, maybe back to Wyalusing.

Views from Mount Hosmer Park to the north across the river and all the little islands. No rain like last year, clear blue skies all day. From here we drove south back to camp for dinner and bonfires.
